Solve : QWest DSL service and speed?

Answer»

I have QWEST DSL Platinum (for several years)which is listed as up to 7M. I ran speedtest and came in about 2.6M on download. My 2Wire gateway/modem setup shows 3.2M in the setup (first time I ever looked at it). I used the setup to turn the power up from 25% to max trying to get service to one of my outbuildings.
Cable is not an option, I'm checking into Clear Wire but so far the signal doesn't look too promising.

Is the 2Wire setup just showing what's available or is it setting my speed and if so can I change it (I'm paying for 7M) ? Can I check this or am I stuck with asking QWest tech support?

I have two telephone lines onto our property and am trying to determine if adding a second DSL service will give me any more capacity. Would a second service give me any more speed and capacity for more users or would I still be sharing the same capacity I currently have available?

Thanks,
SteveUnlike cable, which is a shared network, DSL is unshared. So, theoretically, a 2nd DSL line will double your bandwidth, ASSUMING the MAINLINE to the property is in good condition. The very nature of coaxial cable will always be faster (more bandwidth) than UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair). DSL is also distance limited (15000ft) to the Central Office, unless there is a fiber-optic transition in between.

I've used a 2Wire modem only once & don't remember EVERYTHING about it. Speedtest of 2.6Mb on 3.2Mb setup sounds right. It's POSSIBLE that the setup need to be reconfigured to what you're paying for. You should contact your ISP.
