Solve : Replacing a Server 2000 Domain Controller with a Server 2003 one?

Answer»

I'm trying to replace the entire Windows 2000 Server with a new 2003 version. The problem I'm having is that I NEED to have all the profiles that are on all the workstations LOG into this new server as if it was the old one. Can I do this by simply configuring the server 2003 with the same settings as the old one? (IP numbers, etc) I'd hate to have to go to all the workstations & re-setup local setting like their email and so forth, this is just a basic setup and I'm not looking to use roaming profiles. I just need to fool all the workstations into thinking they are logging into the same old domain. How can this be done? Thanks. I'm not as familiar with setting up new servers, but I think you can migrate all the settings from 2000 to 2003.
Yahoo! SEARCH: Migrate server 2000 to 2003 came up with a bunch of results that look promising. Don't give the new server the IP for the "old" server. Just add it to domain as a new Domain Controller and see what services you have to disable on the old server and enable on the new server (DHCP, DNS etc).
See here some info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379
Search some time for informations about how to do it, ASK us where you don't understand, and take your time, don't be in a hurry for you will be mistaken. As Viking said. You're probably best off joining this server to the domain, promoting it to a domain controller, transferring over the various AD roles and gracefully retiring (or redeploying) the old server.
