Solve : RJ11 to RJ45 using a CAT5 Cable? |
|
Answer» i need to convert an RJ11 to RJ45 using a CAT5 Cable ... Does anyone know how this can be DONE?Can't be done. Different number or wires, totally different configuration. I have an old laptop that has only an RJ11 port....That's the dial-up phone modem port. It's not an ethernet port. How is the wireless hooked up on your laptop? Do you have PC card slots? If you are getting wireless at home you have an ethernet connection in there somewhere. If you have a wireless PC card it may need to be replaced with a card with a RJ45 jack for school.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 23, 2010, 05:26:12 PM ...Do you have PC card slots?...He said he had an old laptop, so PC card slots would be the only way for wireless. BTW, PC Card slots were on laptops since the early 1990's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_CardQuote from: Computer_Commando on June 23, 2010, 06:14:15 PM He said he had an old laptop Since he is a student, I'm willing to bet his definition of "old" is a lot different than mine.Quote from: Computer_Commando on June 23, 2010, 04:58:46 PM That's the dial-up phone modem port. It's not an ethernet port. The idea is to use that port and convert it to an ethernet portQuote from: rthompson80819 on June 23, 2010, 05:26:12 PM How is the wireless hooked up on your laptop? Do you have PC card slots? The wireless connection is an advantek USB Wireless Adapter i attached this to a USB port. No PC card slots availableQuote from: vee7979 on June 23, 2010, 06:38:47 PM The idea is to use that port and convert it to an ethernet portI understand the "idea". Do you understand: "it won't work"? A dial-up modem is not an ADSL modem; the only thing in common is the RJ-11 connector. Dial-up modem = analog DSL modem = digitalQuote from: Computer_Commando on June 23, 2010, 06:46:06 PM I understand the "idea". Do you understand: "it won't work"? Thanks. I understand what u are saying. I was just thinking if it was possible considering that a cable does exist from RJ11 to RJ45... http://www.routertech.org/viewtopic.php?p=30511 Even though a RJ11 and RJ45 plug and jack may look somewhat alike, they are more like night and day. What you need is something like this. http://www.amazon.com/AGILER-RJ45-ADAPTER-NETWORK-COMPUTER/dp/B000BL3M3UQuote from: vee7979 on June 23, 2010, 06:54:14 PM ... I understand what u are saying. I was just thinking if it was possible considering that a cable does exist from RJ11 to RJ45...You can put an RJ-11 plug into an RJ-45 receptacle, but you cannot put an RJ-45 plug into an RJ-11 receptacle. RJ-45 is wider than the RJ-11. RJ-11 is 4-pins, RJ-45 is 8-pins. Technically, RJ-11 is often used incorrectly to describe other sizes. Study this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_jack The electronics behind the RJ11 on your laptop do not support ethernet. If you somehow do connect it with a cable, you will damage the computer or the router or modem. This is a very good solution. insdtead of the rj11 port, i can use the usb to convert to ethernet. Thanx again Quote from: Computer_Commando on June 23, 2010, 07:06:45 PM You can put an RJ-11 plug into an RJ-45 receptacle, but you cannot put an RJ-45 plug into an RJ-11 receptacle.
