Solve : Roommates seem to know what I am looking at.?

Answer»

I recently moved into a shared apartment with wireless Internet.
And roommates know what I am browsing through.
How are they doing this?
And how MUCH can they see?
Are they looking at the same screen as I am?
Or are they looking at a log of site addresses.
Ever since I have noticed this I've been limiting what I browse through.
It is the worst feeling being monitered.
I have to think twice about what I write in a simple E-mail.

And how do I prevent this?
Do I need to get my own apartment and account for that kind of luxury?
Please tell me what roommates with shared wireless internet are capable of!first of all a shared wireless internet connection is just that unless some access to your shared docs on your computer.which should only contain the minimum amount of STUFF like pics or documents. I would say they are snooping around on your computer when you are not there is a possibility but I'm not certain. I would also turn of file and printer sharing on your computer i would go through the network wizard to turn it off you should still be able to connect to the internet. Thanks for your reply.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know the password to my Laptop.
But I will turn off the file and printer sharing imediately after I get home.
I just don't know how much is possible in this situation.

Thanks again for your knowledge.okay sounds good and you're welcome anytime. if you need anymore help let me know or one of the other GUYS. We'll be glad to help youdepending on the wireless router being used they are probably just viewing a log the router keeps (after being told to do so). You can access this at "http://192.168.1.1" default passwords and usernames are usually both "admin".

Either that, or they had access to your laptop at some point (say, you accidentally forgot to turn it off or lock it at some point), at which point they became jerks and put a trojan or something on your machine.

Thank you for your reply.
Sorry for the late one.

One of the guys is really into computers.
I'm sure they are looking at the logs.
But Why do I get the feeling that they know what I write in the E-mails.
Isn't it some how possible to be looking at the same screen?
Or can they click on the logs and see that particular e-mail?

*censored* these roommates!.Quote from: Roomies on June 20, 2008, 05:19:40 PM

g*****N these roommates!.

hmm, not through the logs, I don't think- you should do a malware scan, if this fellow you know is good enough with computers and enough of a jerk he might have put something on your machine for the *censored* of it.

Another possibility is that they are simply recording all the packets and reconsituting all the data. Too me, this seems like an excessive waste of time to see what a roommate has placed in their E-mail, almost prohibitively so.

If you can access the router's setup, put a password on temporarily, and then you can demand that they stop their snooping habits or something, or you won't tell them the password. they'll be able to use internet, just not access any logs. That'll bug the heck out of them.I would say they are looking at the logs to see what websites you have accessed. As far as your emails, you should know that all email is sent in "plain text". There is no encryption on it. Since you are on the same network as they are, they COULD use a packet sniffer (a program that sees all the data that is sent in the network) to log what happens on the network. Then they just weed through it to some understandable text (most of it is in hex numbers) and can read your email since it is just plain text and not encrypted. Also, you said you don't think they know your password to login to your pc. Well, I got a surprise for you. There are programs, mainly in Linux, that when inserted into your pc and boot up from it, will find out what your password is. So you're not really safe in your thinking that they wouldn't know your password. If they did find your password, then they could have installed some program on your pc to monitor what you do.

Again, we can only take your word for it. You haven't explained to anyone how you know they know what sites you have visited. This could all be in your head. Quote from: brett74 on May 02, 2008, 03:53:18 PM

If i was your room mate i would run a keylogger.

Keyloggers are small programs invisibly installed on a computer that record all keyboard input.

but they pc would have to be unlocked for them to access and read the keylog right? or do they email logs now?

all MS Windows are in workgroup MSHOME by default. If you are on the same network, and they are on the MSHOME workgroup, and you have default administrator password blank, or something easy, they can access your entire harddrive.

I would change your workgroup to something not default.

Windows XP Home Edition Uses MSHOME, Windows XP Pro uses WORKGROUP. Chances are XP home is being used here, but I just HAD to point out that not ALL windows use MSHOME Quote
