Solve : Router says connected but no web pages?

Answer»

I have a desk top computer that is connected to the INTERNET by cable modem. I then pick up wireless connection through a linksys WRT54G Router to built in cards on an Imac and an HP Laptop. The Imac is still getting a signal and connecting to sites but the laptop has developed problems. The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv5216cl notebook. It has Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002, and originally had service pack 3. It has 2 GB of RAM and an AMD Turion ML-34 1.79GHz processor. An event occurred, I am not sure what, that took away my documents which were backed up thankfully and stopped the DVD/CD drive from working, also the audio. All sorts of lost files occurred with numerous dialog boxes that would not go away. I did a PC recovery which seemed to cure a lot of the problems regarding DVD and audio but I still was missing files and was back to Service pack 2 and IE6. This was ok for a while and then the present problem occurred. Even though the router seems to be connecting to both the Imac and the laptop the Imac can connect to the internet but the laptop cannot bring up web sites.
I have tried disconnecting the modem and router for 30 secs and also connecting the cable modem directly to the laptop but no joy.
I have also tried in the command prompt ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/registerdns
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew

and

netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh wisock reset catalog

Neither of these OPTIONS worked after restarting the laptop.
I was wondering if WinSockFix would be an option and if so how I could download it without internet connection
I was also wondering if a nasty bug could be the problem and what would you reccomend to tackle that.
I would appreciate any suggestions as I need the laptop on a photoshoot that is coming up soon. Thank you.Quote from: coomie on February 09, 2009, 07:52:07 PM

What sort of "event" would suddenly delete all your personal documents, as well as hose the drivers for your DVD drive and sound COMPONENT?

Try reinstalling the driver of the wireless adapter. Can you connect to the Internet over a cable?

In light of the myriad of odd problems you are experiencing, I would recommend ultimately just reinstalling Windows XP on the HP laptop. You could very well spend several days' time trying to troubleshoot all these errors. Yes, you may have gotten hit by one or multiples forms of malware. It is more time-efficient to just reformat and reinstall. Don't forget to backup your personal files and to re-install an antivirus program. Then, try to make your account a "user" instead of an "administrator". Good luck. Thanks for the suggestions. I do not know what event occured. If I did I may have had a better idea of how to tackle it. The problem is now resolved. It turned out that when I did the recovery it left a RECORD of my antivirus program AVG, even though I could not access it and also brought back a trial of Norton. The two combined to block web pages. When I uninstalled Norton it resolved the problem.Quote
