Solve : Secure wireless access?

Answer»

Hello,
I have two laptops (one is mine and one is my wifes's) that are wireless..I have a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router.. I CURRENTLY have two desktops connected with cable..I wish to connect to the internet, wireless, using the two laptops but not necessarily creating a network, just wish to access the network, laptop to wireless access, not necessarily computer to computer...
I know there are several different methods of security out there but was wondering which would be the quickest and easiest method to have a secure connection for both laptops without creating a lot of work and potiential issues....
Would appreciate any input on this matter,
Thank you,
LarryYou can USE WEP, which makes you generate octal or hex number sets to enter to set up the network.

Use, INSTEAD, the WPA settings. WPA is more secure, and easier to set up, since WPA simply asks for a pass phrase which you select (make it longer than one word), and you put in the pass phrase at each computer you want to connect. The router configures the rest for you.

Doing this will not automatically create a LAN (Local Area Network). It will grant the computers access to the Internet.

Thank you for your quick reply!!.. to aviod a possible CONFLICT with the router, am I correct in assuming I need to use the same pass phrase for both laptops?.. Or can I use a different pass phrase for each latop?
The reason I am asking this and the previous question is so the wife will have a knowledge, as well as I, as to what the procedure is in case she has issues of some kind and I am not around...
Again, Thank you for the input!!!
LarryYou'd use the same passphrase for each computer you want to have access to the network.

You can read about WEP and WPA -- probably more than you want to know!

Hello,
Sorry about the delay in GETTING back to thank you for your assistance.. worked fine once I got the router reset.. have both laptops up and running using a WPA, was simple for the most part and that is not only how I like it, but the wife also!!!
Once again, thank you!
LarryYou are quite welcome. Glad to be of assistance.
