Solve : Setting up Desktop to use my home wireless?

Answer»

I recently purchased a used HP Desktop from work the was part of a workgroup. It has Windows XP Professional on it. I would like to know how to get on the internet on this computer using my current home wireless network. No luck so far. THANKS for any help you can give me.Does this computer have a wireless adapter in it?  Many don't.  If you have the full model of it, post it here, and we can at least then see if it came with a wireless card as standard.

If it doesn't currently have one, you can either buy a wireless adapter for it, or just CONNECT it to your network with an Ethernet cable as normal.I have a feeling that is the problem. It is HP DX5150 SFF. Funny but before I bought it I asked 2 questions. The first one was is it wireless?

Is there somewhere on the computer where I can look. Use it came with the machine, the company had no reason to add one.

Also, this may sound really dumb. If it doesn't have wireless adapter or it is too expensive, my wireless router is the living room where Windstream installed it as a DSL. And the computer will be in a BEDROOM. Is there a way to have a second router??? using the wireless from the living room that I can put next to computer in bedroom and use Ethernet cable?

ThanksSorry but I just tried moving router and it works in bedroom but due to location of phone jack, it is still across the room.  Didn't think I COULD use another phone jack, duh! but it works. Still want to try for wireless.

Thanks so much. Look forward to your answer. This is the desktop the OP has.
HP dx5150 Small Form Factor PC (ED649AA) - specifications.
There is no wireless INSIDE the unit.

Rear: 6 USB 2.0, 1 VGA, 1 DVI-D, audio in/out, 1 microphone, 1 serial, 1 parallel, 2 PS/2, 1 RJ-45; Front: 2 USB 2.0 headphone and microphon
But it has lots of ports.  The RJ-45 is a standard Ethernet. Any of the USB ports can be used with a cheap wireless adapter.

A USB wireless adapter like the one linked above would be the quickest and easiest way to get your PC working on wireless, then, as your PC currently doesn't have that feature.  Bear in mind that a physically small adapter like that may not have great signal, so if you're planning to have it a little way away from the router, you may want to consider a model with an antenna you can see, as you're likely to get a better signal.Thank you both so much for your help.
