Answer» Hi!
I have a laptop with a wireless network card that are connected to the internet wirelessly, and a desktop computer without a wireless network card. Since I am not going to buy a wireless network card or a internet cable to the desktop (because this is a temporarily solution which I only need for 3-4 days), I need to fix this in another way. So what I was thinking.. Is it possible to connect a cable between the two computers and get internet on the desktop computer? Like.. the laptop is sharing the internet, being a switch/router. Is it possible, and if so - how do I do this? The laptop has Windows XP and the desktop has Windows 7 if that makes any difference. I can format and install windows XP on the desktop if that is necessary.
Thanks in advance. You would still have to have a network cable going from the laptop to the desktop.
After that all you need is ICS(Internet CONNECTION Sharing) It's a component of Windows, you would run that wizard on the laptop and connect the desktop to the laptop. So it is possible to just use a network/TP cable from the laptop to the desktop? I just run the ICS on the laptop? Is it easy..? And the windows 7/windows xp thing.. will that work with two different OS'?It SURE will, just follow all the directions that the wizard gives you and you should be just fine.I've never shared a "wireless" internet connection, but don't know why it would be any different than a "wired" internet connection.
Perhaps this will provide more guidance: Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Microsoft Windows
If you're planning on direct "wired" connection between laptop and the desktop, you're going to need a "crossover" ethernet cable. If you use a "switch" or "hub" between them, use a "straight" ethernet" cable. Most ethernet cable use is with a straight cable. Crossover cable (or adapter) should be available at your local computer store.
Can't comment on Windows 7 as I've never seen or used it.Thank you so much! I got it to work : DYou're welcome, come back any time.will that work for windows 95?Quote from: smeezekitty on August 21, 2009, 09:55:13 PM will that work for windows 95?
