Solve : Slow/lost Internet connection?

Answer»

I frequently have problems with very slow or lost internet connection.  Not sure where to start, but I'll give as much info as I can think of and go from there.

I have DSL.  I also have a wireless router, D-Link DIR-628.  My old router died on me about 6 months AGO.  I did not have nearly as much internet connection problems with my old router.  I have a computer plus 2 DirecTV boxes directly connected to the router and numerous other devices that connect up wireless, 3 laptops, Iphone, Itouch, Kindle, and wii.  The symptoms I have are web pages not loading at all or loading very slowly, message on DirecTV that internet not available to name a few.

When I do have a problem, I can always fix it by unplugging the power cord from both the DSL box and the router and then plugging in the power back to the DSL box and then the router.  Problem occures on average once every other day or so and some times I have to reset mutiple times a day.

All the computers are running Windows XP, NT, or 7.  Also sometimes on one of the laptops I get a message about conflicting IP's.

I'm looking for help to TROUBLESHOOT what the problem likely is and how to correct it.  If anyone can think of additional information that I can SUPPLY to help troubleshooting please let me know.

Thanks for anyone willing to help out,

Are you using static IP on certain computers, devices instead of DHCP?I checked all the computers and they are set for DHCP.  Not sure how to check other devices such as Iphone, DirecTV, etc.

As I was checking the computers for DHCP, the laptop I was on lost connection to the router.  I checked my other laptop that was on at the time and that one had also lost connection.  I than checked my desktop which is directly connected to my router and that computer did have internet access.  However by the time I checked the desktop and came back to the laptop, the laptop had reconnected to the router.

So that is an example of what has been going on although usually I need to reset DSL/router to get reconnected. Don't know if this info will help at all or not. Quote from: thammondwis on February 23, 2012, 09:50:22 PM

Is there any other router you could try? Just as a test.

What make / model is the ADSL router ?This is nothing new to me. What do you do when you experience this kind of problem? I work at home and it bothers me whenever I lose my internet connection. You can obviously ignore the above post
