Solve : Slow wifi in apartment, but fine for other Access points.?

Answer»

Please bear with me...my knowledge of wifi networking is not very high.

Computer Specs:

  • New HP computer
  • Intel Quad-Core 2.83GHz
  • 4 GB Ram
  • Vista Home Premium SP 1 (64 bit)
  • Realtek High Definitin Audio...onboard, I think.
  • NVidia GeForce 9500 GS
  • NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter WPN111 (updated Vista driver)

Problem:
My apartment has WEP protected wifi access (2 access points, both same problem) which I'm showing at 11Mbps (isn't this slow?). My roommate in another room has no issues connecting, but on my old computer and now this one (both in the same room) I have a very slow connection, about modem speed. Furthermore, sometimes it seems almost to hang on loading something such as a site or about 20 sec. into a Youtube video.
There are maybe 10 Accesspoints in my range, but all with a lower signal than my apartment access (AROUND 70%). When trying to connect to other wifi points I have no access problems and everything runs quickly.

What I have tried:
  • I have tried moving around my USB "card" within the 3 foot radius the cord allows without improvement.
  • I called my ISP and they pretty much said it wasn't their problem because they haven't had any other complaints.
  • I tried removing all other Access points from my automatic connect list. This did not HELP.
My thoughts:
It seems maybe I am getting a lot of packet loss....?
Could this be due to my physical location within the complex which would cause interference?
Would turning down my signal strength help?...I knew how to do it on XP, but don't know if Netgear still supports it in Vista.

By the way, my www.speedtest.net numbers are app. 700kbps down, 400kbps up on the apartment network.

I appreciate everyone's time they take to respond on here. I have used this site before and it has been very helpful. Thanks!

11Mbps (isn't this slow?)

Wireless-G(most common) is 54Mbps, Wireless-N is 300mbps, and both will reduce speed if the signal is too weak.

Do you know where the router is located? How much is between your network Adapters Antenna and the router? (remember it is a perfectly STRAIGHT LINE- so at 45 degrees a wall will be twice as thick)

it's better to be more perpedicular to the wall through to the router then closer and at an angle. Again... if you know where it is, try different positions. It May require moving the computer to different locations in the room.Try your computers in a different room, if you can, and tell us what happens.
