Solve : Specific Hotspot Problem? |
|
Answer» I don't have me own internet, I mostly use my school computer lab and then would use the free Arby's hotspot near my house if there was anything I needed to finish. The wifi always worked great for about 6 months(very fast and it never disconnected even if I was there for hours). Recently the wifi has stopped, meaning that when I connect to arbys and the little white full bar sign comes up saying I'm connected, I still can't open a working internet browser. And yes I've asked if the wifi is plugged in and even asked a random stranger using the internet if he was having the same problem(no). The wifi works at every other hotspot I've tried. The only thing I can come up to connect LOSING the wifi is that I started a powerpoint class and used a flashdrive to transfer my work from the school computer while I was using the Arbys hotspot. I admit to watching a torrent once or twice on said school computer, and am thinking that maybe I transferred some kind of error onto my computer. Or it could have been a result of the PC tools thing I used for a while and recently uninstalled or restarting the computer when I thought I might have had a virus from a bad website. Does this make any sense? Has this happened to anyone else? Quote even asked a random stranger using the internet if he was having the same problem(no) Don't talk to strangers cause they're only there to do you harm... Quote I admit to watching a torrent once or twice on said school computer, and am thinking that maybe I transferred some kind of error onto my computer. You can't "transfer" errors but you can transfer malware. Do you have a virus scanner and if so, which one? Has it been set to perform a full scan? What does it find? Quote Recently the wifi has stopped, meaning that when I connect to arbys and the little white full bar sign comes up saying I'm connected, I still can't open a working internet browse When you say "internet browser" do you mean Internet Explorer? Have you tried Firefox instead? What happens when you go to start -> run -> cmd and then type ping ixquick.com ? Can you still receive email? (If you're using an email client) Have you tried throwing out all the unused wireless profiles and creating a new one? What does it say when you type in ipconfig /all in the cmd prompt? Quote Does this make any sense? Your story is coherent if that's what you're asking. I'd add some paragraphs every now and then. I've tried firefox and google chrome, nothing works. I tried the Windows Defender scan and a free trail of Avast where I did quick, full, and boot scan and nothing came up. I have to wait until I can go back to the specific hotspot to do the CMD, but is there a way I could copy the image and paste onto ANOTHER reply(screen image?) (What I mean if there are 20 rows of results what should I be looking for?) Also, what Does it mean to throw out a wireless profile? Thanks Quote I have to wait until I can go back to the specific hotspot to do the CMD, but is there a way I could copy the image and paste onto another reply(screen image?) You can press ctrl + printscreen, open up mspaint and then paste it into there. Save it as a jpg. then upload it to photobucket or something similar and then use the img tags to post the image. Or just give me the link. Alternatively you can select all the text and copy it in the command prompt. Just copy the one for the wireless interface. Quote Also, what Does it mean to throw out a wireless profile? I don't actually have any wireless devices here so I can't reproduce the exact steps but if you double click on the WLAN icon it should take you to a screen where you see all the wireless LANs and then on the left-hand side there should be a button that can take you to a list of profiles that have been created for each wireless network that you ever connected to. This may help: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Create-or-modify-network-profiles#There are a COUPLE of other things beyond what RAPTOR is suggesting (although in my opinion they are valid suggestions). When you are at the Arby's location do a search on what actual locations you are connecting to. It may be that it is defaulting to another one nearby that is not as strong. Also another thing you can do is to place your mouse over the icon for the connection and select repair. I am not as convinced that my second suggestion will be of much use as you are getting a connection just a poor one but it cannot hurt anything to try. In my opinion it has everything to do with your connection at that location as you do not experience that problem elsewhere. truenorthThis is what came up when I did the CMD:C:\Users\Hannah>ipconfig/all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hannah-PC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : B8-70-F4-65-BD-A7 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PC I-E NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : D0-DF-9A-16-0D-CB DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::8888:295f:ca92:73ad%11(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.130.137(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, March 15, 2012 11:29:03 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, March 17, 2012 11:29:07 AM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.130.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.130.1 DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 248569754 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-15-81-E1-37-D0-DF-9A-16-0D-CB DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.130.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Tunnel adapter isatap.{AC7A286D-E3C3-47D7-B26F-FB2CC7A38806}: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Microsoft ISATAP Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter isatap.{63D4CA98-FDAC-46F0-B809-683F85D53D75}: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Microsoft ISATAP Adapter #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes C:\Users\Hannah> Also for the 1st time the wifi in other hotspots started acting strangely(turning off most programs like Avast, Adobe, Java, the firewall) so I reset and these are the programs that were removed : Nmap 5.51 SDiManage 1.0.0 WinPcap 4.1.2.4.1.0.2001 Do any of these look malicious or are they just stuff that Windows Update installs? If you do not get a quick and painless fix for this.. Here are my recommendations. A. Go into Arby's and buy something and ask about the hotspot. Be a customer. Have your laptop with you. Let them know you have some issue. You do not need to mention that you are a cyberspace bigger. Just present yourself as a customer. See if they have any suggestions. Expect them to tell you there is a new, more secure sway of doing a log in and it only lasts for one hour for current customers. What I am saying is they have then right to make it hard to get into the hot spot if you are not a customer. B. Boot a Live Ubuntu CD. Any Mal-Ware on your system can not get into the Linux system because the Ubuntu CD does not need anything from the hard drive. Quote Nmap 5.51 if you do not know what these programs do and you are the only user of these laptop, it would probably be better to remove them. They are not malicious in nature (however, I am only familiar with the latter) but if not used properly, they might cause strange behaviour as they do all seem to relate to networking (and security) the ipconfig /all command tells me that you are getting all the necessary leases from the router. You are connected to the wireless network it would seem. Have you tried PING ixquick.com when you're at arby's? What is the result? (try a few more domains that have HIGH up-time) Could you run a scan with Microsoft Security Essentials? Have you removed the wireless profile for Arby's and recreated? You did not answer my question about receiving email through an email client. |
