Solve : speed test?

Answer»

Hi
Could someone please explain, in my router status my downstream speed is 10.6 mbs if I run a speed test it shows between 2-6 mbs at BEST, sometimes less than 1 mbs.

I have spoken to sky and they tell me I have 11 mbs which is the best my line can handle.
Am I missing something?

Router is a Netgear adsl dg834gt.
Thanks in advance.
Is this DSL connection?
Speedtest results will vary, depending on time of the day, how busy servers are, possible ISP throttling, etc., but if you pay for 11Mbps and you're constantly getting much less, I'd complain to your ISP.Hi
I assume it’s dsl I’m actually paying for 20 mbs but sky have told me the line will only handle 11 mbs, o.k. if that’s the best the line can handle so be it.

The bit I don’t understand is the fact that in my router the downstream speed SAYS 10.6 mbs, so isn’t that what should show on the online speed test.

Is there something wrong with the router settings or my P.C.
Depends from your ISP how much of internet gives you.
Your router can handle till that speed which is 11Mbps and it has nothing to do with it.
Explain please how much of internet speed you pay, because i do posses a router with 11Mbps and I do pay for internet speed 512kbps which is a ADSL connection.

cheers.I'd think about switching to cable anyways, if thats possible. If you're paying for 20 and only getting 11, you're already getting screwed. Not to mention the unknown problem that's dropping that 11 to much less. It's kinda hard to tell what it could be though, LIKE Broni said. Actually, now that I think about it, 20 Mb/s is awesome for DSL. The most you can get from any DSL provider in my area is maybe 11 Mb/s. If you want any better, you'd better switch to cable. The bit I’m most interested in is in my router status, it says downstream speed 10.6 is this the speed that the router is receiving or the max possible speed.

If I am getting 10.6 as far as the router then sky have done their bit and I will have to look at the wireless side of things.

I know I should use an Ethernet connection for my speed test but it’s not possible due to the router location.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received.

So you're getting 10.6Mb/s to the router, and then it falls to around 1-6Mb/s at the PC, which is connected wirelessly. Maybe its a range issue? I seriously doubt it though. Have you contacted support at Netgear?YES that about sums it up, the router is only about 4metres from the p.c and the signal strength is showing as good.

I’m afraid my knowledge of networking isn’t great, so I guess Netgear support is the next step.

Thanks
I've done my share of setups with wireless routers, but i've never encountered this type of issue. It's quite possible someone else here can still help though. By the way, you can monitor your speeds through your router?Hi.
Just a quick update problem much improved I updated the driver for my wireless dongle and turned off windows firewall and am now getting 9.8 mps which I am happy with.

Can someone just confirm that the windows firewall is not needed if the router has its own firewall?
Thanks
Normally, most people have them both.Quote from: aussie11 on January 29, 2010, 12:38:17 PM

I can tell you this. I turned off my software firewall in my laptop running Windows Vista and ran a firewall test at http://www.auditmypc.com/firewall-test.asp. I'm using a router between my modem and my computer. The test results said:

"We completed the audit and did not find any open ports.
This is ideal for the average visitor."

I can recall this very question being discussed in this forum many months ago with a forum member named Calum, a former forum moderator, and the conclusion of that discussion was that being online without a software firewall is safe when using a router.

However, I will add that a hardware firewall, i.e. a router, will not detect illegitimate outgoing signals from your computer, just as Windows firewall in Windows XP does not monitor outgoing traffic. So, if, by chance, you had some malware that sending out unknown communication from your computer, that would not be stopped by the router.

So, if you know your system is clean, that you have no malware that existed prior to DISCONTINUANCE of a software firewall, you can feel pretty confident about only relying on a router for firewall protection. Someone could tell me to create a new topic, I just want to ask the following question:
Does the proxy server affect on the firewall or not?

I made this question because the ISP that provides me with internet uses proxy server. Is that Safe or not?

Cheers.Hi
After several speed tests with and without win firewall I have come to the conclusion that it makes little difference so I have decided to leave it on, must have been the driver update that improved things.

Thanks again for all the help.
