Answer» Hi.
I'm trying to connect the two computers in my HOUSE to the internet, using Tiscali and a THOMSON router. One machine has connected fine (otherwise I wouldn't be online), but the other is causing me problems.
I know the machine is capable of connecting, as a few years ago it was connected VIA a wireless plugin to a router. This has worked for 2 different routers in two different houses. However, connecting via an ethernet cable doesn't seem to work. The error message from the Tiscali software asks me to check that I do not have a static dns entry. I've looked, and I can't find anything relevant on the internet. Doen't mean it's not there, just that I can't find it.
Any and all help gratefully received. The PC in question is running windows XP pro, with SP1 (it's not been online for a while, HENCE the lack of updates), 512 mb RAM and a 2.6 GHz processor. If you go into control Panel, and then Network connections>
Right click your LAN connection and choose properties>
SELECT TCP/IP configuration in the selection box and choose advanced/properties (this is by memory-so may be worded differently!)
The new window that pops open will give you details about the IP ADDRESS and DNS entry. Both should be set to obtain automatically in the radio button options.
