Solve : Sun and Solaris?

Answer»

Explain to me how Sun and Solar work?http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/overview/index.html

Solaris is geared at server/network virtualization and package deployment.Sun Microsystems was purchased by Oracle about two years ago; it no longer exists. That was a really bad incident for the whole open-source COMMUNITY. From now on, only Oracle Solaris exists and OpenSolaris is no longer officialy SUPPORTED by Oracle. There's always a tension isn't there, where open source software is commercially sponsored.  Sooner or later someone will fork the open-source code base of OpenSolaris though, SURELY (if it's not already been done)?  (A la OpenOffice/LibreOffice.) Well there's OpenIndiana

Quote
OpenIndiana is a free Unix-like operating system. It forked from OpenSolaris after the discontinuation of that PROJECT by Oracle and aims to continue development and distribution of the OpenSolaris codebase. The project operates under the umbrella of the Illumos Foundation. The stated aim of the project is "[...] to become the defacto OpenSolaris distribution INSTALLED on production servers where security and bug fixes are required free of charge".

Beta releases to download (147,148,150,151)

Also there's Illumos, which appears to be under active development. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on August 16, 2011, 07:33:11 AM

Yeah I get the impression they're spearheading a few requirement-specific forks...?
