Solve : syncing problems over network?

Answer»

Hello, I have an unusual problem and I hope Ive ASKED for help in the right SECTION of the forum? Computer "A" win7 pc, computer "B" and "C" xp sp3 pcs. Computer "C" RECENTLY had major hardware update, including motherboard, HDs, and ram? Correct drivers installed for all new hardware and pc works well? I regularly sync a large folder from "A" to "C" but around the time (after I think) of the upgrade this wont happen. The program just crashes after comparing ok. I use several freeware sync programs and thy all crash when trying to update the folder on "C". "A" will sync ok to "B" and then "B" wil sync ok to "C". I can access, copy, delete, do everything else to and from any pc on the network. I know its easy to blame the software, but the same (several ones) that wont sync from "A" to "C" will sync from "A" to "B" and vicky verka, and they most certainly used to work any which way.

Thanks for reading and any help appreciated This may not be much help. But it is the best I can do.
Think of 'sync' programs as being partnerships.
An exchange of information  resolution two entities is feasible.
But a mutual exchange between three becomes impossible. It is against the laws of physics.

At some point in time one of the three must become the 'King if he Network'. What  King has is the norm for the other two. It works like this:

Let A be the King.
The rafter B must sync with A, the king. But never talk to C.
Also, C must sync with A, but never talk to B.

That's it!

This means that any revisions made o  A are the most important. If you delete a file on A, it will have to come off of B and C eventually.

When I say B can not talk to C, that even miens they can not exchange anything. Ever.

You should limit the MATERIEL to sync to documents and photos, videos and things like that.

Here is an article that provides another explanation.
http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/item85.htmLet me be a little more specific
My win7 pc used to sync with either of my xp pcs using free file sync, and folder sync, and several other freeware programs. I am not concerned about syncing to any 2 pcs at the same time, although free file sync used to do this QUITE easily.

I have a "borrowed copy" of vice versa which will sync to either of the xp machines like the freeware progams used to. Vice versa works perfectly to any pc. Because its borrowed I would like to remove it and have the freeware programs do what vice versa does, and do what they used to.

With respect your explanation does not apply in my case, because I only ever want to sync from a folder on pc A, to a folder on pc b, and then to a folder on pc C. Pcs  B, and C are never required to be source folders, only targets.

The fact that win 7 syncs to xp B, but not to xpc, and then xpB will sync to xpC has me wondering if its a permission/shares issue, but as I said all other network functions between any pc work perfectly? and vice versa works perfectly??   Perhaps a permission issue. Not sure.
I wonder why you've never used Windows 7 file sharing features instead. Quote from: jason2074 on March 01, 2012, 10:11:34 PM

I wonder why you've never used Windows 7 file sharing features instead.

In particular what features do you refer to, bearing in mind i can access win7 folders and files from the other xp pcs, and i share a printer connected to the win7 pc. Thanks for the responseITS FIXED: Turned out to be a gigabit switch. I swapped it for an old 10/100 switch i had and immediately the free sync software programs worked perfectly, so its a dicky switch or some incompatibility with the gigabit switch?

Thanks to all who tried to help what looked like a bun fight.
