Solve : system does not prompt for a key to connect to wireless network?

Answer»

Hi everybody!
My NEIGHBOR recently bought a WiFi router. He encrypted it and told me the password. I try to connect to the access point from my desktop PC (using a WIRELESS card adapter). As far as I know, when connecting to a secured network Windows XP prompts for a key, but in my case nothing happens. I have Windows XP SP3. Would be grateful for any advices.   Ask your neighbor again... If you were able to connect instantly then its not secured.Hello,

Technically what you are doing is illiegal.  The broadband service is provided from the ISP to the person(s) at that address.

Throwing caution to the wind, are you sure you have the correct encryption key, they are usually case sensitive.  First off, can you scan the surrounding area for any wireless routers broadcasting.  Generally most people have them set to broadcast SSID as this MAKES it easier to people to connect to.

Windows XP should identify the router and note a padlock symbol NEXT to it showing it is secure/encrypted.  If no symbol then no encryption.

If your network connection settings shows you are connected see if you have an IP address.Thanks. I'll try that and
