Solve : System Image Fails/Write Error?

Answer»

I have a Compaq CQ50-215NR215 laptop (Vista Home Premium) on which I am trying to create a system image. I have used eight different programs ranging from DriveImage XML to Paragon DBE to Norton Save&Restore to ACRONIS True Image Home to Macrium Reflect Free as WELL as some others. Although they are all able to create the actual image backup file on the C: drive, they all fail when writing the file to the DVD drive. Either "operation fails" or "write error" occurs. This HAPPENS after writing anywhere from 10 minutes to the beginning of the second disk(multiple dvd spanning). The drive is able to read/write data DISCS with no errors. I have done a system recovery but the problem still persists. Thank you.Have you tried first saving the image to a seperate partition and then burning it to DVD ? ?
What level of compression are you setting it to when creating the image ? ?
How much free disk space and RAM are on this machine ? ?
All running processes should be off when working with images as it is very resource intensive...Have you tried first saving the image to a seperate partition and then burning it to DVD ? ?

Thank you for the reply. No, I have only created a file on the same partition. The compression level is highest allowed. There is more than enough disk space. RAM is 3GB. Is it possible for the machine to even run with all processes off in Windows? And then create and burn an image to DVD? Or do you mean all superfluous processes?Well i've used a few of those apps and i don't believe you can create the image to the same partition...
Are you booting directly to the application ? ?Yes, most of them do. DriveImage XML, Paragon DBE, Acronis True Image Home, Norton Save&Restore 2.0 all definitely do. I am trying these programs through Windows since the computer is currently functioning properly. Thank you.Well you can easily test them again by creating a new partition...i do this anyways on all my machines strictly for storing images...reason being an image file for example should never be defragged...causes havoc.

Then select a less aggressive shrinking function...say 50% or so.

You didn't mention what burning app you are using.

Just trying to eliminate variables here...because once you get the hang of handling and creating good images a nice peace of mind felling kinda settles in.
Let us know.Perhaps I will try saving to a different partition. I would like to directly write to DVD. I am trying to find programs that have the DVD burning function built in. Since this backup is for someone who is rather a novice with computers, the restoration process needs to be as SIMPLE as possible. However, if you would, please let me know how to do DVD spanning with a program such as Nero or even Windows after creating the appropriate size backup files in Drive Image XML. I tried Imgburn, but, of course, it only writes to a single DVD. I need a procedure that will be as automated as possible and prompts the user at each step. Compression level is a problem. I have 60 GB to backup. Anything less than maximum compression will take upwards of ten DVDs- too many for the novice user. I would like to keep the number at a minimum. Thanks again for your help.
