Solve : the contents of one of my folders seems corrupt?

Answer»

i'm using windows xp and the folder is in a maxtor external harddrive

The image on the left is what the folders turned into. the little one on the left is what i get when i try to delete them. I've run mcafee virus scan and ad aware and windows defender.

I've never had this problem before. I can't open the files nor can i delete them. Anyone have any clue?

Have you run chkdsk (checkdisk) on this drive?

Enter CMD at start run and at dos shell enter F: for your F: drive shown here, then enter chkdsk /R and see if there are any issues. Check Disk may be able to fix as long as not viral.I ran check disk and it found some errors it turned the folder into a file that my computer wont open. When i look up the properties it says the file type is file. It's only 32kb but it still seems to TAKING up all the space it did before when it was 115 gb.

Is there a way I can delete all that or will i need to reformat that drive?

ALSO is my whole harddrive gonna start slowly corrupting? Should I be on the look out for a new one?I'd back up whatever data you can to avoid a loss of data. Either copy it to media like CDs or DVDs, Thumb Drive, or some other means to avoid a total loss. Sometimes the corruption can become worse. So if you have anything important, I would grab the data of greatest importance first and then take the data of lesser importance later as so you dont know when it may FAIL to the point that you have a non functional drive.

After all important data is off this drive then you can reformat and see if you can make it healthy again, but generally if check disk found issues usually there are problems with the drive itself. You can format it and check disk after and see if it is clean and error free, however I wouldnt use this drive ever again for critical irreplacable data as for its past corruption.Quote from: DaveLembke on January 05, 2009, 04:12:35 PM

The corruption in this case is filesystem problems. The only time corruption is CAUSE for concern after a complete format is if there is physical damage (bad sectors) to the disk.

Since every single Hard disk fails,(it's just a matter of when) it isn't finding the most reliable drive, but making sure to have a safety net of backups, to all sorts of media.
