1.

Solve the equation 2x2 - 5x + 3 by the method of completing the square method.

Answer»

2x2 - 5x + 3 = 0

2x2/2 - 5x/2 + 3/2 = 0 (dividing both sides by 2)

x2 - 5x/2 + 3/2 = 0

[x2 - 5x/2 + (5/4)2] - (5/4)2 + 3/2 = 0

[x - 5/4]2 - 25/16 + 3/2 = 0

[x - 5/4]2 - (25-24)/16 = 0

[x - 5/4]2 - 1/16 = 0

[x - 5/4]2 = 1/16

x - 5/4 = ± 1/4   (square rooting on both sides)

x = 1/4 + 5/4  or x = -1/4 + 5/4

x = (1+5)/4   or x = (-1+5)/4

x = 6/4   or x = 4/4

x = 3/2  or  x = 1
