Solve : Trouble with ipconfig /renew?

Answer»

I've been trying to resolve a problem with my internet connection. After a power outage I have almost no internet. My isp says it's my computer and not their dsl modem. I can ping any site and it RETURNS okay but I can't open any web sites and when I can it takes forever. I can open my isp site www.pldi.net and hp.com but so far that's the only two that I've found that will open. After the page comes up they never finish loading. Other sites will open but takes literally an hour or so to do so. Any how back to my question--- I was told to try ipconfig release and renew and the release says it worked but when I renew it times out and says it's unable to contact DHCP server.  PLEASE HELP!!
I have a HP M8100n pc running vista home premium

Totally frustrated
TimTim:  my advice will not be the greatest, but maybe it's a starting point.

I pinged Google, and got ping statistics for 74.125.79.99

Go to your browser, and put in the IP address instead of google.com.  I'm curious to see if you get to google (or yahoo, etc.) via the IP address.

I'm guessing you've unplugged everything / powered down / powered up everything since the power hit.

Are you working through a router?  If so, run directly from the DSL modem to the computer, so no one can blame the router.  See what sort of results you get.

I've tried ip addresses and yes I've powered down and rebooted. I've done a system RESTORE ran virus, spyware, malware scans and nothing worked. No router, just DSL modem. Are you connected directly to the DSL modem?  You might check the filters on the phone jacks, if you haven't, already.

The modem could be damaged, I suppose.I'd vote for bad  modem too. When the isp guy came out to check the dsl modem he hooked his lap top up and it worked fine according to him.(I wasn't there) I have limited connection. I can go to some sites but they never finish loading or it will say done but errors on page. I can't connect to this site at all. I've tried checking network connections but I really don't understand it very well. My ip and dnl are set to auto but when I look at the net work there is a unidentified network with limited CONNECTIVITY. The broadband connection says GOOD. Could something have been changed there when the power went out? What browser, version do you use? Did you try another browser? Quote

OK, it's frustrating, but we'll continue...sorry -- at work now, jammed -- hang in there.  Oh, that's a clue, by the way.

Thanks, BrianI'm using IE7 and firefox. IE usually times out but will pull up pldi.net and hp.com but never FINISHES loading page. The same with yahoo. Firefox will pull up the google home page and I can do a search and the search page pulls up okay but I can't go to any of the sites. It seems like firefox works a little better. I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall my ISP software after I get rid of the unidentified network and set up everything fresh??? Any thoughts?Another option - messed up ethernet card. I'd invest 15 bucks in a new one.Shame on me for not thinking of that when it was the fix for a computer in the house not too long ago!  Yes, you needn't spend much on a card to find out if that's the problem.
