Solve : USB Autorun?

Answer»

I have an autorun file for my USB memory stick so it has a custom icon when plugged into the computer. Is there any autorun that forces the memory stick to be run on drive G so no matter what computer i plug it in, it will always be drive G instead of drive I or E or whatever.
Thanks for any replies. With the stick plugged in right click My Computer and select Manage....go to Disk Management.
Once there find the stick and right clik it and select Change drive letter and path...select edit and switch it to G:
It helps to give it a volume name as well it will show up the same in any machine.
Unless you put it in a machine that already has a G: then by default it will switch to the next available drive letter...GOOD advice, patio. I never really put much thought into this, but it might come in handy.

Carbon,
What exactly do you have that allows you to use a custom icon? I probably never would've thought of doing such a thing, but now I'm interested.I had to learn this method out of neccessity as at the time i had 3 machines and a benchtest machine in the shop...to make it more confusing 2 of those had multi-boot setups and multiple drives partitions etc.

On one of the machinel the last drive letter was M: just to give you an idea. So when swapping the stick from machine to machine inevitably brain farts would ensue ( with the OS's not me )

I chose R: knowing i wouldn;t see a situation even with virtual drives that any machine would go that high. Needless to say all OS versions were happy with this and i didn't have to wait for hiccups to do work.

The other thing i did find out in all of this is by giving the stick a volume name along with a permanent letter is Windows co-operated much better and picked it up right away in all machines.

Trial and error triumphs again...Quote

I made an autorun.inf with the following code:

[autorun]
icon=icon.ico

I saved that autorun on the FIRST page of my memory stick and I put an icon in my memory stick as well. Unplug and replug and your memory divice would have a custom icon instead of the icon that looks like a drive or something (defult) This doesn't work with windows 2000 and below. Thanks, Carbon, I'll give that a try.

EDIT: Works like a charm. Never realized it would've been so simple.Yeah, I was looking at an autorun for my Halo CD and then i saw 'icon=icon.ico' or something so I did a few trial and erros and manged to get that. It's really nifty having my creepy mug pop up whenever I plug my iPod into SOMEONE's computer. By the way, HTML-Kit has a really handy site for making icons...

A lot quicker than making your own. I'm trying to find a way to set up a custom wallpaper for a USB drive, but I'm having no luck. That would be cool to have a custom wallpaper for USB. I think I saw something about that a while back.....ill try and find it again. It would definitely be a nifty feature. Honestly, I can't even remember how to set a wallpaper for a folder on my computer. It was so simple on Windows 98, but I can't think of how to do it on XP. Of course, it's also 6:30 in the morning and I've been up packing all night and I have spent maybe five minutes trying to do this. Ha.I learned how to add a wallpaper background to a folder in Windows XP from the following link:

That program does it automatically. Now I can just edit the desktop.ini file as I please. Now we'll see if I can somehow figure out how to get more than one color of font for my icons like they are on my desktop (white with black border).
