Solve : Using my laptop to get internet to a desktop?

Answer»

Hello,

I have DSL and a wireless router in my home.  My laptop is capable of receiving wireless internet and I have been using an ethernet cable to share the internet signal it receives with a nearby desktop computer.  Everything was working fine until YESTERDAY when my DSL went out.  The DSL started working again today and I am able to connect to the internet on my laptop without problems.  However, without changing ANYTHING, I am now no longer able to connect to the internet via the desktop.  I did not change any settings but I am not getting internet.

The laptop is running Windows 7 sp1. The desktop is running Windows 2000 sp4.  My wireless connection has sharing enabled via the "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" and I have selected the Local Area Network.  All services are enabled via the configure sharing menu.  The desktop computer knows when the cable is plugged in or not but my network and sharing center on the laptop is showing the LAN has no internet access but fails to tell me why.  I have the LAN automatically obtaining an IP and the LAN on the desktop is doing the same thing.  I'm pretty sure these are the same settings I had before when it was working.

Let me know what other information I can provide that might be useful in answering my question.  I really appreciate the help.It would be far better if you bought a cheap 802.11B/G wifi dongle for your desktop... Windows internet sharing is not a permanent internet sharing solution...

Something like this:

Oh I see... it wouldn't be worth investing in a dongle in this case.

Have you set up your connection like this? Can the desktop access anything else on the laptop, like shared files? Is the WHOLE connection not working or just the internet? Quote from: Transfusion on AUGUST 17, 2011, 04:04:20 AM

Have you set up your connection like this?

The guide says to select properties on my Ethernet connection.  Is this referring to my LAN connection? I have a Wireless network connection (the one I use to connect to the internet), a Wireless network connection 2 (Microsoft virtual wifi miniport) and a Local Area Connection (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller).  There is no separate ethernet connection.  Also, I don't understand why I would share the LAN connection.  Since I am connecting to the internet through the Wireless Network Connection, shouldn't that be the one I am sharing? And I share it VIA the LAN connection.  Those are the settings I had before when it was working.

Anyway, if I go to my LAN and enable sharing through that then I get this error:

I can't find out how to connect to the laptop via the desktop.  However, on my network map on my laptop, the desktop is shown.  Though I'm not able to do anything with it.There may be a problem with either dynamic or static IP address you were using beforehand. If you happen to have a 3rd party firewall(or other than windows firewall), try disabling first. Uncheck/Recheck ICS, reboot host PC and try establishing your connection again. Are you using a cross over cable for the LAN port?

I think it may be an IP problem as well, but I'm not sure how to fix that. I have both computers set for dynamic IPs for the LAN since that is what windows help recommended.

    Here is what I did:

    • I disabled the network firewall
    • I unchecked the sharing option
    • I unplugged the ethernet cable
    • I plugged the ethernet cable back in and waited for it to be found
    • I went to my wireless internet connection and enabled sharing
    • I selected the Local Area Connection as the home networking connection
    • I tried accessing the internet and it didn't work on the desktop but WORKED on the laptop.
    • I unplugged the cable again
    • I turned sharing off
    • I plugged the cable back in
    • I enabled sharing on the LAN
    • I selected the Wireless Network Connection as the home networking connection
    • I tried accessing the internet and it didn't work on my desktop or laptop

Also, I'm not sure if it is a crossover cable, but like I said, this same cable worked in the past.[/list]
