Solve : Very slow connection in Network?

Answer»

I am stumped and need some help. Recently I bought a new HP laptop for my son, and had it join my home network which consists of six other PCs (some laptops, some desktops). His new laptop runs Vista Home, and the computers in the network run XP or Vista.

The problem is that he can join, but any connection between his laptop and the REST of the computers is extremely slow. I find it, but it takes 5-10 minutes. Transfering files takes forever. The network functions PERFECTLY fine for the rest of the PCs.

Anybody have any idea why this is?

Any help appreciated.

JemotoAnyone? Is more info needed? Is he using wireless? Thanks for the response.

Yes, he is using wireless, but so are 4 of the other computers in the network.

JemotoThe network speed is usually determined by your distance from the wireless router, for example the connection speed can be very fast when you are standing next to the router but incredibly slow if you are TWO rooms away. Thanks, yes, I am aware of that, but his laptop is phenomenally slow even sitting next to the router, whil another laptop upstairs functions fine.

Strangely, I just hooked it up to the router with a cable, and then it is fine. I don't understand why this should be a problem with a BRAND new laptop.

Any ideas?

JDownload, and install TCP Optimizer: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Open it, and put a checkmark in Optimal Settings. Click APPLY changes button.
Restart computer, and see if it helped.
