Answer» After looking into my current motherboard's specs, I found that the PCIe slot my Geforce 8600 GTS is on only runs at 4x, which was quite disappointing as it was mislabeled as running at 16x when I purchased it. Anyway, I have rectified the problem, buy purchasing an Nvidia 680i Intel board, and can't WAIT to try it out (haven't received it yet) my QUESTION is this: Will AGP 8x, run faster than PCIe 4x? And one more THING, since my current video card is running at PCIe 4x, will it adapt to the new 16x slot and run at 16x? As I looked all over on the box the video card came in, and it just tells me that it requires a PCIe compliant motherboard, nothing else.YES, it should be quite a bit faster.
And no, you can't put a PCIe card in an AGP slot.
Good luck.
P.S. Do you have a socket LGA 775 processor to go along with the motherboard?Ohh, I do realize that it is impossible to put a PICe card in an AGP slot, my question may have been a bit confusing, I was asking merely gauge how much of a performance increase I COULD expect jumping from PCIe 4x to PCIe 16x. The reason I posed the question was because I heard that AGP 8x has more memory bandwidth then say a PCIe card running at PCIe 4x. And yes, I do have an LGA775 Processor, though not a very good one, a P4 3.2 GHZ with HT.It should be a lot faster. Although the 8600 GTS is not the most powerful card.
I reccomend you buy the E2160 processor and the 8800 GT graphics card, along with the new board.Just a bit of info from my experience. I had a X850 XT PE AGP and upgraded to PCI-E with an older 6800 ULTRA ( an upgrade, but a downgrade). The less powerful PCI-E card way out performed the more powerful AGP card. I wasted my money on the AGP card, I bought it two years ago for like 300ish. I wish I had bought a new motherboard and a PCI-E card back then. Hope this helps.......
