|
Answer» What's the difference between built-in LANcard and PCI LANcard? The "built-in" as you refer to it is a chip built into the motherboard...this is normally referred to as being "on board". Yap I know about that sir but my main is, is/are there difference between the two in TERMS performance?Using the onboard you're limited to the performance of the chip on that board... Using the PCI slot you can INSTALL any card compatible with your OS and depending on the NIC, actually obtain a better LAN connection... If you were to compare a 10/100 onboard chip to a 10/100 NIC PCI...then, no...there wouldn't be any difference..other than the fact you could swap the card out for another. What does this mean sir?If you had a 3Com LAN chip installed on the motherboard...you'd be limited to the performance of that chip...sir. What's this 3Com LAN chip sir?3com is a network card manufacturer. Saviour refered to it as an example, you may have an Intel network card, a Realtek network card etc. There is no quality difference between the integrated (on the motherboard) network card and a similar PCI network card. The only "advantage" is that the PCI card can be swapped, when the integrated network card can not. If you want to swap your integrated network card it would mean you swap the motherboard. This is the "only" difference important to note. |
