Solve : Which wireless dongle??

Answer»

My old dongle Netgear wg111t is not compatible with win 7 64- bit, I have used a work round on it and it now connects but has very POOR signal strength and very unstable down speed.
I have decided a new dongle would be the best option but am confused by which one.

My router is a Netgear 834gt 802.11g 108mbps, router shows downstream connection speed is 11300 kbps.
Two machines share this router mainly just surfing with some downloading.
On a speed test my p.c shows between 500-2094 kbps and my laptop shows 9890 kbps

My questions are.
Will an 802.11n 150mbps dongle connect o.k. with my router?
Is there any advantage using an 11n as opposed to an 11 g with my router?
Thanks
It should work fine with your router. This explains the differences of 802.11n and 802.11g and the speed differences, etc

No there will be no real advantage to using it with your router.

Basically N (5 ghz) has a farther effective range, higher maximum transfer rate than G and operates on a different frequency than G (2.4 ghz)I believe the 108 mbps 802.11g is a non-standard, proprietary implementation; you would need a wireless-g device that is of the same brand and (approx the same age) to use it.I understand what you are saying perhaps sky should find a manufacturer that will support its own hardware, or at least exert some pressure on Netgear to sort it out.

Anyway back to my other question which dongle will work with win 7 64-bit?

My router is Netgear db834gt 108 mbps 802.11g which I have been told brings problems of its own as to a suitable dongle, I know little about this subject so any comments would be appreciated.
Hi.
I decided to try a new dongle realtrek 802 11n/g and although my signal strength has greatly improved (5 bars, was 2) my down speed has dropped to 400kbps.

My laptop is showing 8.8mbps sitting next to my P.C, I have TRIED updating all drivers on the P.C but still no good.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi.
I still need some help.
This is really strange I decided to try my new dongle on the laptop and it works as it should 10mbps down speed.

Plug it back into the P.C 400kbps both machines are running win7 64 bit and both are using the same a.v, all drivers have been updated and they are side by side.

I have now RUN out of ideas, so someone make a suggestion even if it a stupid one, I will try anything.
You should not have two wireless devices next to each other.
They don't play well together. Thanks for the thoughts; I am thinking this is a configuration problem on my P.C.

This is a wifi dongle, plugged into my laptop it gives a down speed of just under 10mbps then I plug the same dongle into my P.C it only gives 400kbps.

Both machines are side by side (for test purposes) and running win 7, the laptop is home edition and P.C is ultimate and both use the same a/v.

So I would think that the speed is O.K up to the dongle in either machine then for some reason the P.C loses down speed due to a configuration problem, but where to look has me stumped.

If anyone can think of a configuration SCENARIO that would strangle my down speed I would be grateful.

Quick update, bought another dongle problem solved, back to 10mbps.
