Answer» Hi, guys
My wife has need of a LAPTOP and wants to use it with a wi-fi connection but I have no idea what we need or how to go about it. Our present oldish PC (which works fine and which I shall continue to use but not wi-fi connected) is connected to Talktalk broadband with a Talktalk modem.
I obviously have to replace the EXISTING modem but will any wi-fi modem work with Talktalk and how do I then continue to use my existing PC hard wired to broadband?
I have a set up disc from Talktalk but presumably that's no use to set up a wi-fi modem?
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks. Hello U will not have to replace the modem. U r going to need a wireless router. These routers can be used wireless and Ethernet connections. The modem will connect to the router. U r going to have to connect yr existing PC with a Cat 5e to the router and setup a wireless connection to the laptop. STOPPIT - using U and R is very annoying
You need to buy a wireless router and connect the modem to it. Then connect the computer to the router with a wire and the laptop to the router WIRELESSLY. Thanks, guys I think I get it.
Do I need some sort of disc to set up the router, and are all routers pretty much the same? They all come with disks but I never use it because you can just plug it in and it works. If you ahve trouble use the disk, it will guide you step by step on setting it up.If you have any problems setting up your router, visit the manufacturers WEBSITE. The major manufacturers have a LOT of info on their websites. major manufacturers include Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear. If you live in the U.S., you can shop at http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=145&name=Wireless-RoutersThanks to everyone who replied appreciate your help.
