State as to why (a) a solution of Na_(2)CO_(3) is alkaline ? (b) alkali metals are prepared by electrolysis of their fused chlorides? (c) sodium is found to be more useful than potassium ?

Answer»

Solution :`Na_2CO_3`is a salt of WEAK acid `(H_2CO_3)` and strong base `(NaOH)`. When dissolved in water, it undergoes HYDROYSIS as FOLLOWS.
`Na_2CO_3 to 2Na^(+) + CO_3^(2-)`
`CO_3^(2-) + 2H_2O to H_2CO_3 + 2OH^(-)`
Due to an excess of `OH^(-)` IONS, the solution becomes alkaline.
