Answer» The cell wall is an outer protective membrane in many cells including plants, fungi, algae, and bacteria. Animal cells do not have a cell wall. The main functions of the cell wall are to providestructure, support, and protection for the cell The primary function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embeddedproteins, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and regulates the movement of substances in and out of cells. The most prominent roles of mitochondria are to produce theenergycurrency of thecell, ATP (i.e., phosphorylation of ADP), throughrespiration, and to regulate cellularmetabolism. The central set of reactions involved in ATPproductionare collectively known as the citric acid cycle, or the Krebs cycle. |
