1.

The elements of 3d transition series are given as: Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn Answer the following:(i). Write the element which shows maximum number of oxidation states. Given reason. (ii). Which element has the highest melting point and why? (iii).Which element is a strong oxidizing agent in +3 oxidation state and why?

Answer»

(i) Mn, because it has electronic configuration 3d54s2 , Thus there are 7 electrons that can be shared.

(ii) Cr, because Cr has configuration 3d54s1 , 6 unpaired electrons participated in formation of metallic bonds.

(iii) Mn3+ . The change from Mn2+ to Mn5+ results in half filled (d) stable configuration.
