The ionisation enthalpy of sulphur is "1014kJmol"^(-1). If its electronegativity is 2.4, what is its electron gain enthalpy?

Answer»

SOLUTION :In the SCALE, electronegativity (E.N) is given in terms of ionisation, enthalpy `(I_1)` and ELECTRON GAIN enthalpy `(E_1)` as
`E.N. = (I_1 + E_1)/(544)`
SUBSTITUTING the values,
`2.4 - (1014 + E_1)/(544)`
Electron affinity `= E_1 = (544 xx 2.4) - 1014 = 290`
Electron gain enthalpy of sulphur = `- 290 kj mol^(-1)`
