The spin only magnetic moment of [MnBr_(4)]^(2-) is 5.9 BM. Predict the geometry of the complex ion. |
|
Answer» Solution :As the coordination number of `Mn^(2+)` in the given given complex is 4, the geometry can be either tetrahedral (`sp^(3)` hybridisation) or square planar (`dsp^(2)` hybridisation). In `[MnBr_(4)]^(2-)`, Mn is in +2 state, i.e., its configuration is [Ar] `3d^(5).mu=5.9` BM means that the number of unpaired ELECTRONS in the complex = 5 (because `mu=sqrt(N(n+2)BM)`. Thus, all the five d-electrons REMAIN unpaired. Hence, the hybridisation will be `sp^(3)` (and cannot be `dsp^(3)`). THEREFORE, geometry is tetrahedral (and cannot be square planar). |
