The two complexes of nickel, [Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-) and [Ni(CO)_(4)] have different structures but posses same magnetic behaviour. Explain. |
|
Answer» Solution :In `[Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-)`, Ni is in +2 state. Hybridisation is `dsp^(2)`. Structure is square PLANAR. All electrons are paired. Hence, it is DIAMAGNETIC. In `[Ni(CO)_(4)]`, Ni is in '0' state. Hybridisation is `SP^(3)`. Hence, structure is DIFFERENT (tetrahedral). All electrons are paired. Hence, it is also diamagnetic. |
