The vapour pressure of pure benzene at a certain temperature is 640 mm Hg. A nonvolatile nonelctrolyte solid weighing 2.175g is added to 39g of benzene. The vapour pressure of the solution is 600mmHg. What is the molecular weight of the solid substance ?

Answer»

<P>

Solution :We know,
`(p^(0)-p)/(p^(0))=(n)/(n+N)`…………..(Eqn.1)
Given that `p^(0)=640mm, p=600mm`
`n=(2.175)/(M)`, `N=(39)/(78)` `(C_(6)H_(6)=78)`
(M is the mol. WT. of the solute)
`:.(640-600)/(640)=(2.175//M)/((2.175)/(M)+0.5)`, `M=65.25`
