1.

The variation in electron gain enthalpies of elements is less systematic than for ionization enthalpies. Out of oxygen and sulphur which has greater negative value for electron gain enthalpy? Justify.

Answer»

Sulphur has greater negative value (-200 kJ mol-1) for electron gain enthalpy compared to that of oxygen (-141 kJ mol-1). This is because, due to smaller size of oxygen the added electron experiences much repulsion from the electrons present in the shell. Due to large size, the electron-electron repulsion is much less in sulphur.
