Thrice a number decreased by 5 exceeds twice the number by 1. Find the number.

Answer»

Let the number be x.

So, thrice of the number = 3x

When it decreased by 5, we get 3x – 5

According to question,

3x – 5 = 2x + 1

⇒ 3x – 2x = 1 + 5

⇒ x = 6

Thus, x = 6 is the required number.
