UI3. A 20 g bullet is shot from a 5 kg gun with a velocity of 500m/s. What is the speed ofthe recoil of the gun? |
|
Answer» OKAY! So let us visualize a person holding a gun and a bullet is fired from it towards the right side.... so the bullet moves towards the right. And the gun moves BACKWARDS i.e towards the left. Since no EXTERNAL force is acting on this bullet and gun system, conservation of momentum becomes valid. Total momentum of the system remains conserved. Let M be the mass of the gun, m be the mass of the bullet, V be the recoil VELOCITY of the gun and v be the velocity of the bullet. therefore, MV + mv = 0 MV = -mv 5000 × V = –(20× 500) (mass of gun in grams) V = –2.5m/s Negative sign indicates that direction of motion of gun is opposite to that of bullet as said earlier. Hope this helps you ☺️☺️ |
