Every human being, every animal and every plant contains a substantial proportion of free or combined water in its body. No kind of physiological activity is possible in which water does not play an essential part. Water is necessary for human as well as animal life to let it go on. The same way, moisture in the soil is equally necessary for the life and growth of plants. Thus water is the basis of life both directly and indirectly. All types of vegetation need water to grow and to flourish. Then all animals drink water and also take it in the form of plants as their food. So it happens with all humans. They also can’t live without water. Besides, they take in the water when they eat plants as their food.

प्रत्येक मनुष्य, प्रत्येक पशु और प्रत्येक पौधे के शरीर में स्वतन्त्र अथवा यौगिक के रूप में जल की पर्याप्त मात्रा होती है। ऐसी कोई भी शारीरिक गतिविधि सम्भव नहीं है जिसमें जल की आवश्यक भूमिका न होती हो। जल मनुष्य व पशु जीवन को बनाये रखने के लिए आवश्यक है। इसी प्रकार पौधों के जीवन व वृद्धि के लिए मिट्टी में नमी भी उतनी ही आवश्यक है। इस प्रकार जल प्रत्यक्ष व अप्रत्यक्ष दोनों रूपों से जीवन का आधार है। प्रत्येक प्रकार की वनस्पति को उगने व फलने-फूलने के लिए जले आवश्यक होता है। फिर सभी पशु जल पीते हैं और पौधों के रूप में अपने भोजन में भी जल ग्रहण करते हैं। ऐसा ही मनुष्यों के साथ भी होता है। वे भी जल के बिना जीवित नहीं रह सकते। इसके अलावा, भोजन के रूप में पौधों को खाकर भी वे जल ग्रहण करते हैं।
