What are (a) representative elements (b) transition elements (c) Lanthanoid and actinoids. Give their position in modern periodic table. |
|
Answer» (a) Representative Elements: Group 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 exhibit the main groups of the periodic table and so, the elements of these groups are collectively called representative elements. These elements belong to s-block and p-block in modern periodic table. (b) Transition Elements: The elements in which the last electron enters in one of the inner-d orbitals are called transition elements. These elements belong (c) Lanthanoids and Actinoids: The elements of 4f series [i.e. from Ce (Z = 58) to Lu (Z = 71)] are called lanthanoids and the elements of 5f series [i.e. from Th (Z = 90) to Lr (Z = 103)] are called actinoids. These elements belong to f-block elements in the modern periodic table which lie at the bottom of the periodic table. |
