What are fuel cells ? Write the electrode reactions of a fuel cell which uses the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen?

Answer»

Solution :A FUEL CELL is similar to a galvanic cell, it generates electricity directly by the electrochemical CONVERSION of GASEOUS or liquid fuels fed into the cell as REQUIRED.
At anode : `H_2(g) + 2OH(aq) to 2H_2O(l) + 2e^(-)`
At cathode : `O_2(g) + 2H_2O(l) + 4e^(-) to 4OH^(-)(aq)`
Overall reaction : `2H_2(g) + O_(2)(g) to 2H_2O(l)`.
