The oxides are binary compounds in which one element is oxygen and another may be a metal or a non-metal. 

They are classified as follows :

  • acidic oxides, CO2, SO2, etc. 
  • Basic oxides, CaO, BaO, etc. 
  • Amphoteric oxides, Al2O3, ZnO, etc. 
  • Neutral oxides, NO, N2O, CO, etc.
