The oxides are binary compounds in which one element is oxygen and another may be a metal or a non-metal.

They are classified as follows :

acidic oxides, CO₂, SO₂, etc.
Basic oxides, CaO, BaO, etc.
Amphoteric oxides, Al₂O₃, ZnO, etc.
Neutral oxides, NO, N₂O, CO, etc.
