What are racemic mixtures? Discuss their resolution involving the formation of diastereomers.

Answer»

Answer:

In chemistry, a racemic mixture, or racemate (/reɪˈsiːmeɪt, rə-, ˈræsɪmeɪt/), is one that has equal amounts of left- and right-handed enantiomers of a CHIRAL molecule. The first known racemic mixture was racemic acid, which Louis Pasteur found to be a mixture of the two ENANTIOMERIC isomers of tartaric acid.

A racemic mixture is a 50:50 mixture of two enantiomers. Separation of racemates into their COMPONENT enantiomers is a process called resolution. Since enantiomers have identical physical PROPERTIES, such as solubility and melting point, resolution is extremely difficult.
