Significant figures in a measurement are the figure or digits that are known with certainty plus one   that is uncertain (i.e. Last digit ).
                                   Or,
 Significant figures in a measured value of  the physical quantity tell the number of digit in which we have confidence.

Example :- 1984 has 4 significant figures
