Long staple COTTON means that the imdividual cotton fibers are long in COMPARISON. The advantage lies when twisting the thread, in that a much stronger thread can be made. In addition the thread can be TWISTED to produce a thinner thread, the KIND that are used in high threadcount sheets. Long staple cottons are measured and determined by the average fiber length. Short fiber products have low durability characteristics when it comes to producing textiles.
