What are the difference between Roasting and Calcination?

Roasting:

Heating of metal ore in presence of air is called roasting. In this step metal ore is converted to oxide.

2ZnS + 3O2 → 2ZnO + 2SO2

Calcination:

Heating of metal ore in absence of air is called calcination. In this step volatile impurities escape and some of the ore decomposes.

CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
