Solution :(i) The buildings of Bombay MAY be broadly divided into (a) Neo-Gothic (b) Neo-classicalor new classical (c) Indo Saracenic.
(ii) Neo-classical: This style is characterised by the construction of geometric structuresfronted with lofty pillars. It was from typical style of ancient Roman buildings. They were reviewed, readopted and made popular during the EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE. To express the glory of Imperial India, ELPHINSTONE Circle covered arcades at ground level, usedinnovatively to suit Bombay.s climate.
(iii) Ino-saracenic: It is specialised by domes, jails, chhatris, arches. It was inspired by the medieval buildings in India. By integrating Indian and European styles in public architecture the British tried to express their LEGITIMACY as rulers of India.
