Answer» The Himalayas are divided into THREE parallel RANGES: 1. Himadri or The Great Himalayas : it is the most continuous range consisting of the loftiest peak with an AVARAGE height of 6000mtrs and width of 320-140 km. It contains all the prominent peaks such as Mt.Everest,kanchenjunga,makalu,dhaulagiri,nanga parbat,annapurna etc. 2. the range lying to the south of Himadri is HIMACHAL or The lesser Himalayas are mainly composed of highly compressed and altered rocks. the altitude varies between 3700-4500mtrs and width of 50 km.the prominent ranges are pir PANJAL(most important),dhaula dhar,mahabharata. 3. the outer most range or the Shiwaliks have an altitude of 900-1100 mtrs and width of 10-50 km . this range is composed of unconsolidated sediments brought down by rivers from the main Himalayan ranges located in North. the prominent hills here are dehra dun,kotli dun and patli dun.
