The first phase refers to the stage of childhood wherein the poet’s mother is young and sweet. Relative freedom and lack of responsibilities, carefree laughter, enjoyment and innocence are the inherent traits of this phase.\tThe second phase moves twenty to thirty years ahead along the path of life. The poet’s mother is now middle-aged. On looking at the photograph, the realisation dawns upon her that everything has changed. She expresses sadness over the loss of those untroubled and happy moments of life. Nostalgia surrounds her and she longs for that innocence and freedom of childhood. The third and final phase is that of the silence of death, which makes its presence felt all around. The poet’s mother is no more and the poet’s sorrow is too deep for words.
