The people at the border smuggled tendu leaf. They took the leaf worth about five hundred and sold it across the border for twelve hundred. But it was not a much profitable bargain. Between the pay-off to officials and to the intermediaries who arrange the sale of the bird leaf, to the man who takes the camel out to graze and to the friend or relative who harboured them, there was precious little left. It was just enough to buy some used terylene garments and then it was time to make the long trek back across the desert. The crossing of the border was not easy. Zaman was one such wily old smuggler. When Najab crossed the border without the knowledge of Zaman, he became very angry. Nobody could cross the Rann without his support.

सरहद के लोग तेंदु पत्तों की तस्करी करते थे। वे अपने साथ लगभग पाँच सौ रुपये के तेन्दु पत्ते ले जाते थे जिन्हें वहाँ सरहद के पार बारह सौ रुपये में बेच देते थे। लेकिन यह एक ज्यादा फायदेमंद सौदा नहीं होता था। संबंधित अधिकारियों और दलालों (मध्यस्थों) जो तेन्दु पत्ता बिकवाने की व्यवस्था करते थे और वह व्यक्ति जो ऊँट को चराने ले जाता था तथा उन मित्रों या रिश्तेदारों को जो उन्हें शरण देते थे, को रिश्वत देने के बाद मुश्किल से ही कुछ बचता। जो कुछ बचता वह टेरेलिन के प्रयुक्त वस्त्र खरीदने के लिए काफी होता और तब फिर से रेगिस्तान से होकर लम्बी यात्रा कर लौटने का समय हो जाता। सरहद को पार करना आसान नहीं होता था। जमन एक ऐसा ही कपटी बूढ़ा तस्कर था। जब नजब ने बगैर जमन की जानकारी के सरहद को पार कर लिया तो वह बहुत नाराज हो गया था। उसकी सहायता के बगैर कोई भी रन को पार नहीं कर सकता था।
