The lower airway begins in the chest, where the trachea splits into two tubes, CALLED the mainstem bronchi, which each go to one of the lungs. The bronchi continue to split into smaller and smaller airways, and eventually split into even smaller airways called bronchioles, which split even further, until they become tiny airways called terminal bronchioles. The terminal bronchioles have microscopic air sacs called alveoli. There are millions and millions of alveoli. The walls of the alveoli are incredibly THIN, and they are surrounded by tiny capillaries. Oxygen passes from the alveoli into the capillaries , and is exchanged with carbon dioxide from the blood. The carbon dioxide is exhaled from the lungs, and oxygen is inhaled, and delivered to the cells.
